artist statement

i grew up on a big farm in western nsw, pretty much in the middle of nsw actually.
i guess it was pretty isolated, and i spent a lot of time as a kid daydreaming and imagining all kinds of things. then i went to boarding school in sydney and lay awake til a million o’clock every night listening to my walkman for 6 years. i studied graphic design in sydney after that and moved out to the north coast before i got hit by a bus or something and missed a life in paradise... i've been living in byron bay for some time now, which is a kind of paradise, and am almost finished my uni degree in visual arts. now i dream of the big cities like barcelona, tokyo, new york... [it’s ok, i’m coming...]

i make art because.

it just comes out.

i am continually surprised by the range of media and styles through which my creativity chooses to express itself.

i am inspired by the beauty and the meditative nature of everyday sorts of objects and activities.
i am inspired by words (spoken, thought, written) and these often feature or form the basis of my work. anything from humorous ditties or strange things i’ve seen written on walls to deep poetic or philosophical ponderings...

oh and my latest thing is pretty much anything that starts with p.

i've spent the past year copying text madly like a scribe onto canvas (and paper). in fact i made the biggest works on canvas i've made to date. i copied whole sections of books by Umberto Eco, Jean Baudrillard, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guittari (and friends). i added days, weeks, months worth of text messages, emails and skype chats. and then excerpts from books by Haruki Murakami, Hunter S Thompson [to name just two], poetry by Dante, random thoughts of my own.... like a thousand [or thousands of] words to tell a picture....

oh and i listed everything i could think of that started with p.

then i took books and circled all the p words and painted over all the other words. i found that it is easier to do this with books in foreign languages.

i still like to simplify things into a few key words.
like i love you or hell yeah.

and then see how they sound in other languages.... je t'aime, infierno siiii...?

hmmm... ja. hasta luego, hell yeah.

what next?

well, i have discovered video art, and over the past 6 months have taken a lot of footage. mostly of my shadow and the ground as i walk over it. and of things like windmills slowly turning and clouds drifting by. i think i’ll make a movie out of these. and after all those words and words i might just get back to making pictures using colour and paint and pencils.

oh, and how about a soundscape or a song? merci, au revoir.

december 2009.
